Catherine Stasevich is a ceramics artist from the rural town of Richland, MI. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Western Michigan University in 2008 and her Master of Fine Arts from East Carolina University in 2013. Catherine fires primarily in a type of Japanese wood-fire kiln known as an anagama. She creates sculptural and painted vessels depicting plant and animal forms.
My focus for many years has been firing wood kilns. The often unpredictable
variations in a wood firing have influenced the form of my pottery as well as my glazing
method. I work with this unpredictability in mind, rejecting set-in-stone ideals for a piece
and instead thinking of all the varying colours or textures that the kiln could bring out. My
goal is to give each pot a wide range of ‘good things’ that can happen to it in the wood
firing through the use of slips and places for the ash to run or rest. In a sense, I have
learned to let go of the finished product, but not before I have set it up for the best resul
